Costa Rica Bird Watching

Bird Watching Paradise

Rancho Pacifico is a Costa Rica bird watching paradise. Did you know there are more bird species in Costa Rica than in all of the United States and Canada combined? In fact, over 900 species of birds live in Costa Rica for at least part of the year. Guests can spot over 200 species just within walking distance of the hotel. There are very few places in the world where bird lovers can see such amazing diversity. Whether you are coming to Costa Rica specifically for bird watching or you just love to see pretty birds by the pool, we have options for everyone.  Below are some of the bird watching possibilities at Rancho Pacifico.

Casual Bird Lovers

Many guests love birds, but a relaxing vacation experience is their highest priority. Luckily, some of our most impressive birds can be seen from our beautiful open-air dining room, our tropical gardens, or just relaxing by the pool. If you want to see birds from your room, we recommend our Villas and Treehouses. Swallow-tailed kites, yellow-throated toucans, scarlet-rumped tanagers, and parrots and hummingbirds are all very common visitors.

Enthusiasts

For those guests that are more enthusiastic about birding, we have lots of options.  Our new yoga deck and bird observation platform makes an ideal spot for looking out over the forest canopy. And if you are ready for even more bird watching, our extensive trail network covers a variety of bird habitats and climate zones. Many species of tanagers, flycatchers, trogons, hummingbirds, honeycreepers, wood creepers and others can be found in the pristine rainforest that surrounds us.

Fanatics

Are you coming to Costa Rica specifically for bird watching?  Rancho Pacifico is your ideal base. Our concierge staff can arrange hikes and tours both on and off the property. We can have professional guides come to the hotel to lead you on a private bird expedition. We can also arrange tours of Corcovado National Park, Marino Ballena National Park, and the Sierpe River mangroves – three hotspots of bird diversity. Alternatively, guided or unguided bird watching is available at the nearby Hacienda Baru Wildlife Refuge. Bring your best equipment and get ready to add to your life-list!

We have photographed most of the species that live near the hotel.  We need your help to complete our photo collection!  The gallery below includes some of our favorite shots.  All of these photos were taken within walking distance of the clubhouse.  Come to Rancho Pacifico and share this bird watching paradise with us.
